Forum to keep filling stations open
An initiative to protect Britain’s network of rural filling stations has been launched with the full backing of the petrol supply industry.
A group representing interests ranging from industry representatives to rural garage owners will look at measures to keep fuel outlets readily accessible to communities throughout the country.
Energy Minister Brian Wilson said the presence of a filling station makes a big difference to the viability of any community, and it is often a huge loss when one closes.
“There is already a wide range of schemes in various parts of the UK which recognise the importance of rural filling stations,” he said. “Part of this group’s work will be to build on these and encourage best practice on a national basis. Local authorities and economic development agencies have a big part to play.”
“It cannot be right, for instance, that filling stations in some parts of the country are obliged to bear costs due to the way local authorities enforce regulations while the same requirements are interpreted differently elsewhere.”
