PM's monthly press conference

17 October 2006

The PM answered questions from national and international journalists during his monthly media briefing from inside Number 10.

The session began with a presentation about change in the NHS.

Questions then followed on topics including the medical treatment of British troops serving overseas, Muslim women wearing the veil, faith schools, Iraq and control orders.

Change in the NHS

The PM watched two presentations about the health service. Chief Executive of the NHS David Nicholson and Chief Medical Officer Sir Liam Donaldson spoke about the progress and direction of the NHS.

Selected PM comments from the press conference

On health reforms

"There are tough and difficult decisions being taken and it is important that people understand the context for it."

On Muslim integration in British life

"Difficult though these issues are, I think they have to be raised and confronted and dealt with."

On medical treatment of British troops

"We should do the very best for our armed forces when they're injured in combat."

On the presence of armed forces in Middle East

"We are on the side of ordinary, decent Muslims in Iraq or Afghanistan who want their own democratic government."

About the monthly press conferences

Once a month while Parliament is in session, the PM answers questions from local, national and international journalists inside the State Dining Room of 10 Downing Street.

The session usually lasts an hour and Mr Blair has no prior notification of the questions. He is the first Prime Minister to hold such regular sessions.
