Questions of identity

Tony Blair at his monthly press conference 8 May 2006 Picture: Press Association "The benefits of a good identity system are very clear", Tony Blair insisted as he introduced his monthly press conference. He gave a presentation which spelt out the benefits of ID cards. You can question the boss of the scheme in a webchat here on Tuesday.

During the conference, the PM was asked about the Respect agenda and the Queen’s Speech. Questioned about the death penalty sentence for Saddam Hussein, he said the verdict acted reminded us of the former Iraqi president’s "barbaric brutality".

Friends of the Earth

Campagining schoolchildren deliver a petition to Number 10, 8 November 2006 A group of schoolchildren got the chance to voice their concerns about climate change directly to the PM this week. Six pupils, aged between eight and 17, met the PM at 10 Downing Street with a petition calling on the Government to take urgent action.

Mr Blair attended the Pride of Britain awards to present a gong to a man known as the "grandfather of charity shops". Joe Mitty was given the lifetime achievement award for his work for Oxfam.  The PM said the awards allowed us to show our pride in our fellow citizens.

Overseas visitors

Poland's President Kaczynski and Tony Blair answer questions in a joint press conference in Number 10 A number of overseas leaders arrives for talks with the Prime Minister this week. First to arrive was Romano Prodi, the Italian prime minister. Mr Blair said the two nations had a "very strong" bilateral relationship.

Then Tony Blair welcomed Poland’s President Lech Kaczynski to 10 Downing Street. After their talks Mr Blair and Mr Kaczynski signed a joint communique setting out a "shared vision” for Europe’s future. Also this week New Zealand’s Helen Clark arrived for talks.
