PM takes trip to nuclear power site

16 November 2006

Part of the Sellafield nuclear site Tony Blair has visited the Sellafield nuclear power site.

The PM met with a number of community stakeholders to discuss the future of nuclear industry in West Cumbria.

When he published the Government’s energy review earlier this year, the PM said nuclear power would play an important part in Britain’s energy future.

The site, which covers an area of approximately two square miles just north of the village of Seascale, represents the most challenging nuclear site management programme in the world.

It is managed and operated by the British Nuclear Group and houses part of the world’s first commercial nuclear power station, Calder Hall, which operated from the early 1950s until 2004.

Their activities centre on remediation, decommissioning and clean-up of the historic legacy.

During the tour the Prime Minister stopped at a vantage point to see the whole site.

He was later introduced to members of staff and a number of recent graduates and apprentices.
