PM pledges to continue fight against Aids
1 December 2006
Despite real progress there is no let up in the "heartache, death and destruction" caused by Aids, Tony Blair has said.
In an article for the Daily Mirror to mark World Aids Day, the PM said the "help and international leadership" that the UK was showing over the issue remained vital.
Britain is the second biggest donor, he pointed out, having committed £1.5billion over three years. He wrote:
"The emphasis we gave to Africa at the Gleneagles summit led to the historic commitment to provide universal access to Aids treatment and care by 2010."
Between 2003 and 2006, the number of people on treatment in sub-Saharan Africa increased 10 times to more than a million.
