PM addresses NHS chiefs on need for reform

5 December 2006

Prime Minister Tony BlairThe Prime Minister said the reform of the NHS is essential if it is to "continue to meet the challenge of changing times."

In a speech to the NHS Confederation Tony Blair welcomed two reports that he received this morning from Health Secretary Patricia Hewitt. He said they provided "a compelling and vivid account" of the programme of hospital service improvement that the NHS is currently undergoing.

The reports, ‘Emergency Access’ by Professor George Alberti and ‘Mending Hearts and Brains’ by Professor Roger Boyle, two senior doctors, focus on the changes in Accident and Emergency facilities and stroke and heart disease treatment.  The reports directly respond to the concerns of local health campaigners across the UK.

Mr Blair told the audience of medical directors and health managers that " the reason for change is the best reason there can be:  better treatment for the patient."
