Tony Blair has moved to allay concerns over policing arrangements and help the negotiations to restore power-sharing in Northern Ireland.
In a written ministerial statement, the PM confirms that the Police Service of Northern Ireland and the Security Service will be "completely distinct and entirely separate" bodies.
The Ombudsman will also have statutory powers to hold to account all police officers.
Northern Ireland could have devolved Government by March 26 if all parties endorse the St Andrews agreement, finalised last year, and now presented as the Northern Ireland Bill.
Its twin pillars are power-sharing on a fair and equitable basis, and support for policing and the rule of law across the whole community. This last condition has caused concern amongst some parties.
On Monday Tony Blair urged all parties in Northern Ireland not to waste the "once in a generation opportunity" for lasting peace.
