PM defends military action in Iraq

15 March 2007

Tony Blair has insisted that the allied operation in Iraq since 2003 had been the "right thing" to do.

He blamed the violence there on a minority of extremists and said the operation in Iraq was part of a global battle against terrorism.

In a Sky News interview ahead of next week’s fourth anniversary of the war, Mr Blair said:

"I can’t think of a better cause than helping people who want to be democratic and free."

He said it was a tragedy that so many British and US soldiers had lost their lives.

But he went on:

"They have not lost their lives because we’ve been trying to do the wrong thing in Iraq. We’ve been trying to do the right thing."
