Press briefing from the Prime Minister’s Official Spokesman on: Cabinet

The Prime Minister’s Official Spokesman (PMOS) began the briefing by giving journalists a readout from this morning’s Cabinet. The Prime Minister started off by acknowledging that this was not quite a normal day. The Prime Minister then confirmed that he would be going to his constituency, and he confirmed that he would be making an announcement about his intentions. The Prime Minister said however that he did not think this was the day for comments, although some indicated they might want to make comments, he said that could be left for another day since this was not the last that Cabinet would be seeing of him as Prime Minister.
Cabinet then discussed the normal Parliamentary business, and Margaret Beckett gave a report on last week’s conference on Iraq held in Sharm el Sheikh. The Cabinet was just about to break up when the Chancellor intervened, acknowledging the Prime Minister could rule him out of order, but he did not think it was right to finish the Cabinet without offering thanks and appreciation to the Prime Minister for his unique achievements over the last ten years, and for the unique leadership that the Prime Minister had given his party, Britain, and the world. There was then much thumping of the table. The Prime Minister then departed for his constituency where he will make his announcement later on this morning.
Asked if anybody else joined the Chancellor in his tribute, the PMOS replied that they did not.
Asked if the Prime Minister gave a date when he would be leaving office, the PMOS replied that the Prime Minister did not.
Asked if there were any tears, the PMOS replied that it was a surprisingly business like occasion.
Put to him that it had been suggested that there were a number of jokes, and could he recall a few, the PMOS replied that there was as always a good sense of humour, but he could not remember any jokes.
Asked if all of Cabinet attended, the PMOS replied that as far as he knew it was a full Cabinet.
