Prime Minister:

I think the important thing about what we have agreed today is that we have not only recommitted ourselves to all the commitments we entered into a couple of years ago at Gleneagles, but we have said how we are going to do them. So for example there is a $60 billion commitment on help for HIV Aids, there is a major initiative on education and additional funding for that, there is support for African peacekeeping, support specifically for Africa’s ability to trade its goods, and support also for proper governance because this is a partnership. It is a deal between Africa and the developed world. And just as we have recommitted ourselves to the substantial increases in support and help for Africa, so Africa has recommitted itself to its responsibilities as part of a partnership for proper governance, against corruption for proper democracy and so on.

Now both of us know that we have still got, on both sides, a long way to go and a lot to do. But I think the truth is there has been immense progress made and perhaps one really important indication of that is that the Japanese have said that for next year’s G8 Africa will be again right at the centre of the agenda, and that has got to be good news.
