Blair archive - press briefings

Journalist Downing Street press briefings are also known as "lobby" briefings after the journalists who congregate in the lobby if the Houses of Parliament to report political news.

Briefings are given each day that Parliament is sitting, at 1100 GMT/ BST and 1545 GMT/BST.

The Prime Minister’s Official Spokesman (PMOS) answers questions from journalists on current news topics that are of interest to them. The PMOS may also use the opportunity to give out information he believes the media need to know.

At other times - for example, during Parliamentary recess - there is one briefing a week, usually on a Monday morning.

Since February 2000, a record of the main points made in the briefing have been published on the Downing Street website.

You can read summaries of briefings from Tony Blair’s time as Prime Minister by following the links below, or use our search facility to find a briefing by keyword.
