23 July 2007
Gordon Brown has welcomed the NATO Secretary General Jaap de Hoop Scheffer to Downing Street.
Although Mr Brown had previously spoken to Mr de Hoop Scheffer over the telephone, this was their first meeting in person.
During their extensive conversation on Afghanistan, the PM insisted that the UK was committed to supporting the country. However, both Mr Brown and Mr de Hoop Scheffer agreed to take a fresh look at how work there could be better shared.
Other topics discussed included co-operation between the EU and NATO, and NATO reform.
The Secretary General will also meet with the Secretary of State for Defence, Des Browne, and the Minister for Africa and the United Nations, Lord Malloch Brown.
