Gordon Brown has begun his visit to the US by sharing a private dinner with President Bush at Camp David. The PM flew into the Maryland base last night for the two leaders’ first face-to-face talks since Mr Brown took over at Number 10.
During his flight, Mr Brown told reporters:
"I want to do more to strengthen even further our relationship with the US.
"This is a partnership that is rooted in something far more fundamental and lasting than common interests or even a common history. It is our shared ideals that for two centuries have linked the destinies of our two countries together."
He also praised President Bush for his "leadership in this fight against international terrorism".
The Foreign Secretary, David Miliband, and the US Secretary of State, Condoleezza Rice, will join the PM and the President for their meeting later today. The talks are expected to be wide-ranging, covering Iraq, Iran and climate change, but with a particular focus on the crisis in Sudan.
Following the talks, Mr Brown and President Bush will host a joint news conference at Camp David before Mr Brown moves on to Capitol Hill to meet with leading figures from the Senate and House of Representatives. Later during his trip, Mr Brown will meet United Nations Secretary General, Ban Ki-moon, and deliver a keynote speech on international relations.
