Gordon Brown has said that the UK still has work to do in Iraq before British troops can leave the country, but that progress is being made.
Speaking during a press conference at the presidential retreat, Camp David, Mr Brown said that the UK still had "duties to discharge" to support both the elected Iraqi government and the international community.
However, British forces have already changed operations from being combative to overseeing three out of the four areas they are based in, and Mr Brown said that he hoped to do the same in the fourth area soon.
The PM went on to say that he had three objectives for Iraq: to achieve national security, attain political conciliation and ensure all Iraqis have a stake in their future.
He said he was please with the progress made so far by Iraq in establishing its own security services, and looked forward to passing complete control to the Iraqi government and regional administrations in future.
President Bush added that he appreciated the PM’s commitment to Iraq, saying Mr Brown "understands what failure in Iraq would mean" and "understands failure is not an option".
