Citizens Jury Leicester - Transcript

A Citizens’ Jury has been held in Leicester to discuss the issues of law and order, crime-fighting and community policing.

Read the transcript for the film below:

Gordon Brown:

Can I say, first of all, what a pleasure it is to be here with you this morning and to thank you all for coming from all over the country to Leicester for this great event today. Jacqui Smith, who’s the home secretary, and I, with Ronnie Flanagan, who’s been conducting a review of all this for us, wanted to come here today to listen to what you had to say about how we deal with some of the problems of antisocial behaviour and some of the problems of law and order in our communities. So the purpose of this and why increasingly you’ll find me and others going round the country, and maybe in your own region there’ll be a citizens’ jury taking place with maybe more people from each of your regions coming together from the different towns and villages and cities, is that we cannot make the decisions for the future unless we listen and unless we learn from what you’re saying and unless, not just listen and learn, we involve and engage you in what can make your communities better places.

Woman:

Yes. You know more about it, yes.

Jacqui Smith:

Right.

Man:

That might help.

Jacqui Smith:

So that might mean the council?

Man:

The council, yeah.
