Gordon Brown:
I just wanted to say what a privilege it was to be able to come here today to the opening of this great cardiothoracic centre. This has been years in the planning, and I congratulate everybody who has made it possible. Angela Smith, your local MP, has been telling me all the time that we need the funds for it, and now that this £60 million investment has been made and now I see the enthusiasm of all the staff and I see the satisfaction of two of the first patients, I see what a great facility this is and I want to congratulate all of you. The NHS only works because of the staff, because of the commitment of all of you and because of what you have done to make this, I think, a world-class facility that all over the world people are now going to come and visit and see what you’re achieving here. And I know that you’ve already had 100 open-heart operations even before this opening. I know that patients from all over Essex and beyond are going to come and use this, and I know that this is a state-of-the-art, high-technology facility, as I’ve just seen, that has impressed me a great deal. So congratulations to all of you for everything that you’re doing. I believe that this is a facility that we can all be very proud of, but most of all I’m proud of all those who serve the health service and serve it with such dedication and commitment and professionalism and serve it every day. Thank you very much for what you do.
