Gordon Brown has said he is confident of securing the UK’s "red lines" in the EU Treaty to be discussed today in Lisbon.
Speaking to journalists as he arrived at the two day summit, the PM said that "detailed changes" in the text, drawn up over recent months, would "protect the the British national interest". It was "important for Britain to decide" on issues such as foreign policy and security and obtain the necessary opt-outs, he said.
Mr Brown added that it was time for the EU to move on from "inward discussion" and focus on the global economy, international security and climate change.
The Prime Minister has made it clear that he will veto any treaty document that does not honour the UK’s "red lines" negotiated at the Brussels EU summit in June.
