“Red lines secured” - PM

The Prime Minister and Foreign Secretary David Miliband smile at the start of a meeting of European Union leaders in Lisbon The British national interest "has been protected" Gordon Brown said early this morning, after agreement was reached on the EU reform treaty.

Britain defended its position on foreign policy, labour rights, justice and home affairs and the tax and social security systems at the summit in Lisbon.

The Prime Minister added that Europe must now "move on" and deal with the issues that matter to the people of Europe - economic growth, jobs, climate change and security.

Speaking to journalists prior to discussions last night, the PM said that the UK’s intention and objective throughout the process was to "ensure that the British national interest is protected in all respects".

Mr Brown added that it was time for the EU to move on from "inward discussion" and focus on the global economy, international security and climate change.
