Gordon Brown opens new science gallery

20 November 2007

The Prime Minister has opened the new Launchpad gallery at the Science Museum in London.

Accompanied by Culture Secretary James Purnell, Mr Brown toured the revamped facility as the Government announced a £13 million injection into the Science Museum family. The money will be used to create new galleries in London and at the National Media Museum in Bradford and the National Railway Museum in York, ensuring free admission to the museums over the next three years.

The PM said:

"Britain’s national museums and galleries are among our finest achievements as a nation. Internationally renowned for excellence and innovation, they are also a priceless educational resource.

"This museum is a brilliant example of how imagination and energy can bring science to life for young people and give real added value to the fantastic work taking place in schools."

The hands-on Launchpad gallery, which opens to the public on 24 November, has more than 50 different exhibits aimed at encouraging eight to 14-year-olds to make sense of the world around them.
