Gordon Brown has launched a £9 million "International Inspiration" sports team designed to help London’s 2012 Olympics leave a lasting legacy around the world.
The Prime Minister announced the initiative in the Indian capital New Delhi during his two-day visit. India is one of five countries which will benefit from the scheme designed to encourage youngsters to fulfil their sporting dreams.
Speaking at the Delhi University Sports Complex, Mr Brown said:
"I’m delighted to be here as we prepare for the Olympics in London in 2012 to launch International Inspiration.
"It is a £9 million programme that’s extending the offer of sport and sporting opportunity to five countries and today I want to launch our venture in India - India is one of the greatest sporting countries in the world."
India is expected to benefit directly from £4 million of the programme cash.
Mr Brown added: "It’s within the potential of every young person to gain sporting excellence and the purpose of International Inspiration is to encourage sporting activities in India and other countries."
Following the announcement, the Prime Minister watched youngsters demonstrate their soccer, hockey and footballing skills.
