March 5 2008

In Prime Minister’s Questions today, Mr Brown said there could be "no better way" to mark the forthcoming International Women’s Day than to reduce the deaths of women during childbirth that currently stands at half a million people a year. In countries such as Sierra Leone, one in seven births results in the mother losing her life, he said.

The PM called for "more nurses, more midwives, more help with treatment" through the International Health Partnership, an initiative set up last year to improve the way that international agencies, donors and poor countries work together to develop and implement health plans.
