PM honours children s heroes

16 March 2008

The Prime Minister has met a group of award winners honoured for their contributions to children and children’s causes.

Mr Brown met the News of the World’s Children’s Champions and guests at a reception in 10 Downing Street last week ahead of their award ceremony in central London. Winners included Sara Payne, campaigner for child protection from sexual offenders, and Jordon Lyon, from Wigan, who lost his life while saving his step-sister in a pond.

Speaking at the reception, the PM said:

"You’re inspirational and you’re changing people’s lives. Everyone of you has should tremendous courage to go where other people haven’t dared to go."

Ex-Spice Girl Emma Bunton, one of the judges on the Children’s Champions panel, said:

"It’s so wonderful to be here - especially having just become a mother myself. A lot of the winners have said to me ‘I was only doing what anyone would do’ but in this day and age people who do that are amazing."

The Children’s Champions winners each receive a prize of £5,000 with the overall winner awarded £10,000. The award ceremony, attended by the PM and his wife, will be broadcast on 16 March.
