Eric Sorensen appointed to the Museum of London

The Prime Minister has appointed Eric Sorensen as a Governor of the Museum of London. His term of appointment will run from 6 April 2008 to 5 April 2011.

Biographical Notes

Eric Sorensen is currently Chief Executive of Thames Gateway London Partnership and works as part of a shared effort to transform and regenerate the Thames Gateway, focusing on housing, social infrastructure and jobs. Previously, Mr Sorensen was Director of the Paddington Health Campus Project, a planned PFI redevelopment project for the rebuilding of St Mary’s Hospital. Before that, he was Chief Executive of the London Development Partnership. From 1997 to 1998 he was Chief Executive of the Millennium Commission, distributing lottery grants to support worthwhile projects, and from 1991 to 1997 Chief Executive of the London Docklands Development Corporation. In his earlier career Mr Sorensen was a senior civil servant in the Department of the Environment, with roles including Director of Housing, Personnel Director and Head of Inner Cities Directorate. He is a non executive Director of Homerton Hospital, a member of Islington Council’s Standards Committee, and Chair of the Royal Docks Charitable Trust which supports community groups in the locality.

1. The Museum was looking for people with strategic planning and policy making at a senior level.

2. Museum of London was set up following the merger of the Guildhall and the London Museums in 1965 and is the world’s largest urban history museum. The Museum of London Acts of 1965 and 1986 define its scope of responsibilities and activities, which include caring for and making accessible a collection of over two million historic objects that speak to the story of the city.

3. The Greater London authority Act 2007, transfers the Government’s responsibilities for the Museum of London to the Mayor and the GLA, including the Prime Minister’s power of appointment to the museum’s Board of Governors with effect from 6th April 2008.

4. The posts are not remunerated. Reasonable expenses can be claimed.

5. The Appointments have been made in accordance with the OCPA Code of Practice. Appointments are made on merit and political activity plays no part in the selection process. Eric Sorensen has not undertaken any significant political activity during the last five years.
