Gordon Brown has taken part in a Q&A session at the London Book Fair with novelist Sebastian Faulks.
Attending the event to mark the National Year of Reading, the PM said that reading had been "a great passion of my life" and that "books are everything".
Mr Brown also revealed that the books he grew up with included works like Lucky Jim by Kingsley Amis and Catcher in the Rye by JD Salinger.
Asked about the National Year of Reading, the Prime Miniater stressed the importance of offering personal tuition to children struggling with their reading skills and of schemes aimed at giving free books to children as they grow up.
