PM meets Ukranian President

Gordon Brown has met the President of Ukraine, Viktor Yushchenko, in Downing Street and in a joint statement both leaders highlighted the close friendship and co-operation between the UK and Ukraine.

The Prime Minister expressed strong support for Ukraine's membership, in time, of the EU and NATO and he encouraged Ukraine to press ahead with the necessary reforms.
As a further sign of Ukraine's important role in international security, President Yushchenko committed Ukrainian support and technical expertise to the UK/France-led helicopter initiative to provide more helicopters to EU, UN and NATO operations around the world.
