In a speech to the Church of Scotland Assembly today, the PM said that people across the world were able to discover a "shared moral sense" thanks to modern communications, regardless of differences in religion or culture.

Groups mobilising in this way can become "the most powerful weapon for justice ever put in human hands," he said.

The PM said:

"With this powerful weapon for change: the power that comes from the millions calling, networking, marching for change millions are moved to action - as with make poverty history - against the great injustices of illiteracy, disease and environmental degradation.

"And with this most powerful peaceful weapon for change, a global society founded on a global ethic can deliver new global rules and institutions promoting peace with prosperity."

Reflecting on his own religious upbringing through his father, Mr Brown said he was committed to the Church’s "enduring vision of the good society".

"..the good society of compassion and justice that today is needed more than ever, at home in our own country and abroad in our world.

"And while I would respectfully suggest that our country is fairer today than in the past, I accept with humility today that our country is not yet fair enough and so we must do more."
