Gordon Brown has welcomed the announcement of a new Nissan car designed by British engineers and set for production in Sunderland.
The PM took a tour of the Nissan Design Centre today with CEO Carlos Ghosn to see the new model car. The announcement of the venture "guarantees jobs for the long-distant future" and will see Britain "leading on an export model that will sell right round the world", he said.
Mr Brown added that Nissan is producing more cars than ever before at its Sunderland plant, "a sign of the health of modern manufacturing in Britain".
The £55 million investment, of which £6.2 million will be provided by the Government, is expected to safeguard 400 jobs in Sunderland and around a further 700 in the associated supply chain.
