The Queen has approved the nomination of the Right Reverend Timothy Martin Thornton MA, Area Bishop of Sherborne, Salisbury diocese for election as Bishop of Truro in succession to the Right Reverend William Ind BA, who resigned on 22 April 2008.

Bishop Thornton (aged 51) was educated at Southampton University and trained for the ministry at St Stephen’s House, Oxford. He was Assistant Curate at Todmorden, Wakefield Diocese from 1980 to 1982. From 1982 to 1985 he was Priest-in-Charge of St Peter, Walsden. He was Chaplain to the Colleges in Cardiff, Llandaff diocese from 1985 to 1987. From 1987 to 1991 he was Chaplain to the Bishop of Wakefield and also from 1988 to 1991 he was Diocesan Director of Ordinands, Wakefield diocese. From 1991 to 1994 he was Chaplain to the Bishop of London and also from 1991 to 1998 he was Honorary Assistant Priest, St Mary with St George, Cranley Gardens. He was appointed Principal of the North Thames Ministerial Training Course in 1994. In 1998 he moved to become Vicar of Kensington, St Mary Abbots, St George and Christ Church. He has been Area Bishop of Sherborne, Salisbury diocese since 2001.
He is married to Sîan and they have two children. His interests include Rugby Union, Cricket, keeping fit and reading (especially church history and novels).
