The Queen has approved the nomination of The Very Reverend Stephen Platten BEd, BD, Dean of Norwich, for election as Bishop of Wakefield, in succession to the Right Reverend Nigel McCulloch MA, who resigned on 6 December 2002 upon his translation to the diocese of Manchester.

The Very Reverend Stephen George Platten (born 1947) was educated at London University, Trinity College Oxford and Cuddesdon College. His first curacy was at Headington, Oxford from 1975 to 1978. From 1978 to 1982 he was Chaplain and Tutor at Lincoln Theological College. From 1983 to 1989 he was Diocesan Director of Ordinands and Canon Residentiary, Portsmouth Cathedral. He became the Archbishop of Canterbury's Secretary for Ecumenical Affairs in 1990. Since 1995 he has been the Dean of Norwich.
Stephen Platten is married to Rosslie and they have two sons. His recreations include walking, music, literature and Northumberland. He is also the author and editor of a number of books.
