The Queen has approved that the Reverend Gordon Ferguson McPhate, MB, ChB, MA, MD, MSc, MTh, FRCP, Chaplain and Senior Lecturer in Saint Andrew’s University be appointed to the Deanery of Chester in succession to the Very Reverend Stephen Stewart Smalley MA, PhD, on his resignation on 31 July 2001.

Notes for the Editors
The Reverend Doctor Gordon McPhate (aged 52) served his first curacy at Sanderstead, Southwark from 1978 to 1980. From 1981 to 1986 he was Priest Vicar and Sacrist at Southwark Cathedral, and a Lecturer in Physiology at Guy’s Hospital Medical School in the University of London.
From 1986 to 1989 he was an Assistant Priest at Saint Michael and All Saints’, Edinburgh. Since 1986 he has been Anglican Chaplain (subsequently Senior Chaplain) and Lecturer in the University of Saint Andrews; he was made Senior Lecturer in 1993.
He is also the Director of Medical Teaching at the University, and a Consultant Chemical Pathologist. Dr McPhate also serves on the Professional Conduct Committee of the General Medical Council.
His interests include science and religion, medical ethics, classical and choral music, cinema and reading history and biography.
