The Prime Minister has approved the appointment of Geoffrey Bowman CB, of the Parliamentary Counsel Office, to succeed Sir Edward Caldwell KCB, who retires as First Parliamentary Counsel in August 2002.

Geoffrey Bowman, 56, has been Parliamentary Counsel since 1984. He was educated at Roundhay School, Leeds, and Trinity College, Cambridge. He taught law at Cambridge and Liverpool Universities between 1968 and 1970 and was a practising barrister from 1969 to 1971, joining the Office of Parliamentary Counsel in 1971. From 1977 to 1979, and again from 1996 to 1998, he was seconded as draftsmen to the Law Commission.
