The Prime Minister has today appointed Sir Ron Cooke and Mr Richard Haythornthwaite as Trustees of the National Museum of Science and Industry for a period of four years.

Biographical Notes

Professor Sir Ron Cooke has been Vice Chancellor of the University of York since 1993 and President of the Royal Geographical Society since 2000. He has had an early career as lecturer and Visiting Professor, and his specialist interest in desert geomorphology, and those aspects of geomorphology that relate to human use of the natural environment, continues. He has been a Member of the Higher Education Funding Council for England since 1997; Chairman of the Learning and Teaching Committee since 1998, and of the Steering Group on the e-University since 1999. He was awarded the Founder’s Medal of the Royal Geographic Society for contributions to geomorphology in 1994.

Mr Haythornthwaite has been Chief Executive Officer of Invensys plc since October 2001. He was previously Chief Executive of Blue Circle Industries and has also been a corporate and commercial director of Premier Oil plc; President of BP Venezuela - BP Group; and General Manager for Magnus Oil Field, BP Exploration. He is also Chairman of the Centre for Creative Communities, an independent charity working the fields of arts and education, cultural exchanges and urban regeneration to promote through collaborative partnerships the building of creative and sustainable communities, and has recently become the Chairman of the Almeida Theatre.

Sir Ron Cooke and Mr Haythornthwaite hold no other public appointments and have not been involved in any political activity in the last five years.
