Residentiary Canonry of the Cathedral Church of Christ

The Queen has approved that the Very Reverend Nicholas Guy Coulton BD, Dean of Newcastle be appointed to a Residentiary Canonry of the Cathedral Church of Christ, Oxford in succession to the Very Reverend Robert Jeffrey BD on his resignation on the 31 July 2002.

Nicholas Coulton is 62. After attending Blundell’s School, he studied law, passing the Law Society Final Examination in 1962. Following two years in practice as a solicitor, he then went on to train for the ministry at Cuddesdon College, Oxford. From 1967 to 1971 he was a curate at Pershore Abbey in the Diocese of Worcester. From 1971 to 1975 he was Domestic Chaplain to the Bishop of St Albans, and then Vicar of St Paul’s, Bedford, (St Albans diocese) from 1975 to 1990.

From 1976 to 1989 he was a part -time Industrial Chaplain. From 1985 to 1990 he was a Proctor in Convocation. In 1990 he was appointed Provost of St Nicholas’ Cathedral, Newcastle upon Tyne, becoming Dean in 2001. He is a Governor of the Newcastle upon Tyne Church High School and of Dame Allan’s Schools. Since 1997 he has been a Director of the Ecclesiastical Insurance Group. He is a member of the Legal Advisory Commission of the Church of England, and on the Executive of the Association of English Cathedrals.

Since 1997 he has represented the Northern Deans in the General Synod. He is a member of the North East Assembly, representing the Faith Communities. He chairs the North East branch of the Council of Christians and Jews, and also the Newcastle Diocesan Committee for Inter Faith and Ethnic Relations.

At Christ Church Nicholas Coulton will act as Sub Dean.

He is married to Edith and they have one son Andrew, and two daughters, Katherine and Sarah. His interests include gardening, reading, listening to music and historical exploration. He has particular links with the Province of the West Indies, and has twice worked briefly in Guyana.
