Deanery of Durham

The Queen has approved the Very Reverend Michael Sadgrove MA, FRSA, Dean of Sheffield to be appointed Dean of Durham in succession to the Very Reverend John Arnold MA, DD on his resignation in December 2002.

The Very Reverend Michael Sadgrove (born 1950) was licensed to officiate in the Oxford diocese from 1975 to 1977. He was a tutor at Sarum and Wells Theological College between 1977 and 1982 and was Vice-Principal from 1980 to 1982. From 1982 to 1987 he served as Vicar at Alnwick St Michael and St Paul in the diocese of Newcastle and was Vice-Provost, Canon Residentiary and Precentor at Coventry Cathedral from 1987 to 1995. In 1995 he became Provost at Sheffield Cathedral becoming Dean in 2000.

Michael Sadgrove is married to Jennifer, and they have four children.

Michael has written on a range of theological subjects. His interests include music, classical literature, European issues, riding Sheffield’s trams and walking the North East of England.
