Notes for Editors
- The Millennium Commission was set up as an independent body in 1993 under the National Lottery etc Act. It is one of the causes that share proceeds from the National Lottery and distributes Lottery money to assist communities in marking the close of the second millennium and celebrating the start of the third. The Commission has still to oversee the completion of a number of Millennium projects.
- Under the National Lottery etc Act 1993, the Commission is defined as: two Ministers, one who chairs the Commission; one member nominated by the Leader of the Opposition; and six independent members, drawn from across the UK and representing a broad range of interests. We are currently looking to replace the remaining Commissioner following the decision of Simon Jenkins not to continue.
- With the exception of Michael Heseltine, these are all first re-appointments. Michael Heseltine was the Government member of the Commission prior to 1997, and was re-appointed as the Opposition’s nominee thereafter.
- The Commission meets monthly, and more frequently when necessary and members receive no remuneration beyond expenses. With the exceptions of Chris Smith, Mo Mowlam, Lord Glentoran and Michael Heseltine, none of the Commissioners have undertaken significant political activity.
