First Church Estates Commissioner

John Sclater Esq CVO yesterday tendered his resignation to the Crown as First Church Estates Commissioner, and his resignation has been accepted.

The First Church Estates Commissioner is an appointment made by the Queen on the advice of the Prime Minister. The First Commissioner chairs the Statutory Assets Committee of the Church Commissioners, which is responsible for managing the assets of the Commission (worth some £4.4bn at the latest valuation, at the end of 2000). The First Commissioner is also a member of the Board of Governors of the Church Commissioners and is the senior lay trustee. Mr Sclater was appointed First Commissioner in June 1999.
