Chairman of Historic Royal Palaces

30 March 2001

The Prime Minister, Tony Blair, announced today that Lord Airlie has been reappointed as Chairman of Historic Royal Palaces with effect from 1 April 2001 for a period of 18 months.

Notes to Editors

Lord Airlie was appointed as the first Chairman in 1998 and has served one term. He was Lord Chamberlain of Her Majesty’s Household between 1984 and 1997. He is Lord-Lieutenant of Angus until he retires in May 2001. Lord Airlie is President of the National Trust for Scotland. He holds no other public appointments and has not carried out any political activity in the last five years. Historic Royal Palaces is a Royal Charter Body with charitable status. It is contracted by the Secretary of State for Culture, Media and Sport to manage the palaces on his behalf. It is responsible for the care, conservation and presentation to the public of: HM Tower of London, Hampton Court Palace, Kensington Palace State Apartments, the Banqueting House at Whitehall and Kew Palace with Queen Charlotte’s Cottage. Lord Airlie’s reappointment and continuing leadership will allow the Board of Trustees of Historic Royal Palaces to build on the excellent start they have made in implementing better management arrangements for the palaces following the agency’s change in status to a non-departmental body.
