Life Peerage

26 April 2001

The Queen has been graciously pleased to signify her intention of conferring a Peerage of the United Kingdom for Life upon General Sir Charles Guthrie GCB LVO OBE.

Note for Editors

General Sir Charles Guthrie attended The Royal Military Academy Sandhurst in 1957 and was commissioned into the Welsh Guards in 1959. He was appointed Commander-in-Chief, British Army of the Rhine in 1992, Chief of the General Staff in 1994, and served as Chief of the Defence Staff from 1997 until his retirement. The Prime Minister has decided, after consultation with the House of Lords Appointments Commission, that a limited number of holders of very high office may be recommended direct to The Queen by him. This life peerage is the first one to be made under these arrangements. It may be necessary to consider this arrangement again in the light of the Government’s final response to the Wakeham report on reform of the House of Lords.
