Suffragan See of Sherborne

The Queen has approved the appointment of the Reverend Timothy Martin Thornton MA, Vicar of St Mary Abbott, Kensington, to the Suffragan See of Sherborne in the Diocese of Salisbury in succession to the Right Reverend John Kirkham MA on his resignation.

The Reverend Timothy Thornton (aged 44) studied for his first degree at Southampton University and for the ordained ministry at St Stephen’s House, Oxford. He served his curacy at Todmorden in Wakefield Diocese from 1980 to 1982 and became Priest-in-Charge of Walsden from 1982 to 1985. From 1985 to to 1986 he was Chaplain of the University of Wales then Senior Chaplain from 1986 to 1987. He was the Bishop of Wakefield’s Chaplain from 1987 to 1991 as well as Director of Ordinands between 1988 and 1991. He remained Dr David Hope’s Chaplain upon the latter’s translation from Wakefield to London in 1991. He was Principal of the North Thames Ministerial Training Course from 1994 to 1998 and he has been Vicar of St Mary Abbots Kensington from 1998.

Timothy Thornton is married to Sian and they have two teenage children.
