Appointment of the Suffragan See of Beverley

The Queen has approved that the Right Reverend Martyn William Jarrett MPhil BD AKC, Suffragan Bishop of Burnley in the Diocese of Blackburn, be appointed to the Suffragan See of Beverley in the Province and Diocese of York in succession to the Right Reverend John Scott Gaisford MA, on his retirement.

Beverley is the See reserved for the Provincial Episcopal Visitor for the Northern Province.

Notes for Editors

Bishop Jarrett (born 1944) studied theology at King’s College, London. Following two curacies, both in urban parishes in the Bristol Diocese, he moved to become first Curate and then Vicar of the newly-created parish of St Joseph the Worker, Northolt. From 1981-85 he was Vicar of St Andrew’s Uxbridge. In 1985 he was appointed as Selection Secretary on Advisory Council for the Church’s Ministry. Between 1991 and 1994 he was Vicar of Chesterfield, Our Lady and All Saints. Since 1994 he has been the Suffragan Bishop of Burnley in the Diocese of Blackburn. Bishop Jarrett is married to Betty and they have two daughters. His recreations include psephology, vegetable gardening and reading.
