The Queen has approved the nomination of the Right Reverend Geoffrey Graham Dow MA MSc Mphil DPS, for election as Bishop of Carlisle in succession to the Right Reverend Ian Harland MA on his resignation.

The Right Reverend (Geoffrey) Graham Dow (born 1942) was educated at The Queen’s College Oxford. He subsequently obtained an M Phil in the Doctrine of Justice from Nottingham University, and a Diploma in Pastoral Studies from Birmingham University which involved him in placements as a probation officer and a welfare officer. He was curate at Tonbridge St Peter and St Paul in the diocese of Rochester from 1967 to 1972. From 1972 to 1975 he was Chaplain at St John’s College Oxford, and from 1975 to 1981 he was a Lecturer in Christian Doctrine at St John’s College Nottingham. In 1981 he became Vicar of Holy Trinity in the centre of Coventry and in 1988 also Canon Theologian of Coventry Cathedral. He has been Area Bishop of Willesden since 1992, and has chaired the Executive of London Church Leaders, London’s main ecumenical body, since 1997. Bishop Dow has published a number of books including most recently "A Christian Understanding of Daily Work" (1994) and "Pathways of Prayer" (1996) .

Bishop Dow is married, with four children. His recreations include steam and narrow gauge railways, model railways, travel and music. His wife, Molly Dow, has a keen interest in spirituality and spiritual direction and is a member of General Synod.
