Sir Anthony Hammond KCB QC, Her Majesty’s Procurator General and Treasury Solicitor, is retiring from the public service at the end of July. The Queen has been pleased to approve that Miss Juliet Wheldon CB QC, at present the Legal Adviser to the Home Office and Northern Ireland Office, be appointed H.M. Procurator General in succession to Sir Anthony. The Lord Commissioners of Her Majesty’s Treasury propose to appoint Miss Wheldon to be the Treasury Solicitor in succession to Sir Anthony. Mr David Seymour, at present the Legal Secretary to the Law Officers, has been appointed to succeed Miss Wheldon as Legal Adviser to the Home Office and Northern Ireland.

The post of Procurator General and Treasury Solicitor is at Permanent Secretary level and Miss Wheldon has been appointed following an open competition. She is the first woman to hold the post. Miss Wheldon is 50 years of age. She has been the Legal Adviser to the Home Office and Northern Ireland Office since 1997 and was previously the Legal Secretary to the Law Officers and before then Legal Adviser to the Treasury. She was educated at Oxford University and was called to the Bar in 1975. She joined the Government Service in 1976.
Sir Anthony Hammond who will be aged 60 in July is a solicitor, who joined the Home Office in 1968, becoming the Legal Adviser to the Home Office and Northern Ireland Office in 1988. Between 1988 and 1992 he was the Solicitor to and Director General of Legal Services in the Department of Trade and Industry. He became the Treasury Solicitor in March 1997. Mr David Seymour is aged 49. He has been the Legal Secretary to the Law Officers since 1997 having previously been Deputy Legal Adviser in the Home Office. He was educated at Oxford University and was called to the Bar in 1975. He joined the Government Service in 1976.
