The Prime Minister announced that Britain will donate £10,000 towards a permanent memorial for the victims of the Childers backpackers fire. Making the announcement when he met Australian Prime Minister John Howard, the Prime Minister said: "The backpackers fire was a terrible tragedy. Our thoughts are with the families of those who have died at this distressing time. We understand the Mayor of Childers is considering plans for a memorial for the victims of the fire to ensure this tragedy are not forgotten. I am pleased to announce today that we will be making a donation to the memorial."

The Childers backpackers fire occurred on the morning of 23 June. 7/8 (not all identities of the dead have been confirmed) of the 15 victims were British. The precise details of the memorial will be worked out in the longer time when the community has had time to recover from the immediate effects of the tragic events of 23 June.
