Five new Chevening Scholarships will be offered to Australians next year in celebration of Australia’s Centenary of Federation the Prime Minister announced today. The first successful candidates will gain the unique title of "Chevening Centenary Scholars". Making the announcement after he met with John Howard, the Australian Prime Minister, the Prime Minister said: "Information sharing and personal contact has been fundamental to our strong and enduring relationship with Australia. These scholarships enable young, gifted Australians to study at our world famous universities and form life long friendships with their British counterparts. I am delighted to announce these extra Chevening Scholarships for Australia’s Centenary of Federation year."

Past Australian Chevening Scholars (year of scholarship in parenthesis) have included Senator Nick Minchin (90/91), Australian Minister for Industry, Science and Resources; Gareth Grainger (88/89), Deputy Chairman of the Australian Broadcasting Authority; Roger Wilkins (88/89), Director General of New South Wales State Cabinet Office; Lyndon Rowe (89/90), Chief Executive of Western Australia’s Chamber of Commerce and Industry; Janine Kirk (88/89), Executive Director of the Committee for Melbourne; and Christopher Evans, Shadow Minister for Family Services and The Aged. The British Chevening Centenary Scholarship awards will be full cost awards, covering air-fares, fees and a monthly stipend. They will be awarded across a range of academic disciplines including Management and Business, International Relations, Media, Economics, Environment, Human Rights, Law, Science Policy and Political Science. With the five new scholarships there will be a total of 22 British Chevening scholarships available next year to Australians. The scheme is worth about £270,000 (A$700,000).
