Britain and Australia will sign an e-commerce MoU later this year. The MoU will be designed to promote safe internet information sharing and trading between the two countries.
The agreement reflects both governments’ commitment to forge global consensus on how to approach issues raised by the rise of the internet and e-commerce as a trading tool. Britain and Australia intend that their MoU will be a significant step forward in addressing these issues. Announcing the MoU, the Prime Minister and Mr Howard, the Australian Prime Minister, said: "Encouraging e-commerce will benefit many trade sectors. An MoU is a commitment on our and the Australians behalf to establish regulatory methods for dispute mechanism and safeguards to protect consumers and businesses. The MoU will also promote government and business co-operation in the IT, telecommunications and information service industries. "In the run up to Australia’s Centenary of Federation this MoU shows that we continue to be committed to deepening and strengthening our two countries wealth of people-to-people ties and business links into the next century. It takes our partnership into new and exciting territory." This will be the UK’s third e-commerce MoU, following those signed with Singapore and Hong Kong last year. Australia has released e-commerce joint statements with the United States, Japan, China, the Republic of Korea and Canada.
