Suffragan See of Burnley

The Queen has approved the appointment of the Reverend Canon John William Goddard BA DipTh, Team Rector of Ribbleton, to the Suffragan See of Burnley in the Diocese of Blackburn in succession to the Right Reverend Martyn William Jarrett MPhil BD AKC on his translation to the Bishopric of Beverley.

Canon Goddard (aged 52) studied for his first degree at Durham University ( BA Hons Theology) and remained there for a Diploma in Theology. He was ordained to the York Diocese and served his first curacy at South Bank, Middlesbrough and another at Cayton with Eastfield, Scarborough. From 1975-82 he was Vicar, Middlesbrough Ascension and from 1982-88 Vicar Middlesbrough, All Saints. Between 1981-87 he was Rural Dean of Middlesbrough. He became Canon and Prebendary of York Minister in 1987-88. He was Vice-Principal of Edinburgh Theology College between 1988-92 and has been Team Rector of Ribbleton, Preston from 1992. Canon Goddard is married to Vivienne and they have two recently graduated sons. His interests include working with wood, restoring an old house, walking and swimming.
