Bill to pave way for EU enlargement

The Government has introduced the EU enlargement Bill in the House of Commons. The Bill, once enacted, will incorporate into UK law the Treaty bringing more countries into the European Union.

Heads of State and Government and Foreign Ministers from the fifteen existing and ten new Member States of the EU signed an Accession Treaty in Athens on 16 April.

The ten countries are:

  • Czech Republic,

  • Estonia,

  • Cyprus,

  • Latvia,

  • Lithuania,

  • Hungary,

  • Malta,

  • Poland,

  • Slovenia and

  • Slovakia

The Bill provides a power to grant nationals of the Czech Republic, Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Hungary, Poland, Slovenia and Slovakia the same rights to work in the UK from 1 May 2004 as people from the existing Member States.
