Employment up by 283,000

Latest figures show the number of people with jobs rose by 47,000 in the last three months and by 283,000 since last year. Almost three quarters of the working age population are now in work.

Unemployment has fallen slightly by 2,100 this month with the number of people claiming benefit steady at 3.1 percent for the sixteenth consecutive month.

Minister for Work Nick Brown said:

“Vacancies remain at high levels. There are over 10,000 new jobs notified to Jobcentres every working day and we know that many more are available from other sources. This demonstrates the dynamic nature of the UK labour market.

“Our active labour market policies, delivered through Jobcentre Plus, provide flexible solutions at a local level - enabling all those seeking work to access these opportunities.”

Average earnings growth was 3.4 per cent in the year to March 2003, up 0.3 per cent from the February rate.
