PMOS briefing - 16 May

Briefing from the Prime Minister’s Official Spokesman on: NHS Waiting Times and Euro.

NHS Waiting Times

The Prime Minister’s Spokesman drew journalists’ attention to the latest NHS waiting time statistics for in-patients and out-patients for the month of March which had been published today. The figures showed that the number of people waiting for NHS in-patient operations had fallen below one million for the first time in a decade. This fall represented an important milestone on the way to meeting the NHS planned target which stated that no one should be waiting longer than six months for an operation by the end of 2005.

Asked whether Cabinet Ministers were due to receive the eighteen technical documents today or tomorrow, the Spokesman said that her colleague had spent a great deal of time at yesterday’s briefings explaining the process. She had nothing further to add to what he had said. Journalists could be reassured that Ministers would receive the technical documents in time for the weekend. Asked if the Prime Minister had seen them yet, the Spokesman underlined once again that we had absolutely no intention of providing a daily commentary on the process.

Asked if the Government was concerned about the possibility of the documents being leaked, which could have a serious impact on the financial markets, the Spokesman reminded journalists that it wasn’t our policy to respond to hypothetical questions. In answer to further questions, the Spokesman declined to get drawn into a discussion about processology.
