National Heritage Memorial Fund

The Prime Minister has been pleased to re-appoint Primrose Wilson OBE from 7 April 2003, The Earl of Dalkeith from 17 June 2003, Nicholas Dodd and Giles Waterfield from 10 September 2003, and James Wright from 1 November 2003, as Trustees of the National Heritage Memorial Fund each for a period of three years.

Notes for Editors

The National Heritage Memorial Fund (NHMF) is a fund of last resort which provides grants for buying items which are of outstanding interest, importance to the national heritage, and which are at risk of being developed, damaged or destroyed. The NHMF is also responsible for the distribution of the heritage share of the proceeds from the National Lottery which it does via the Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF). The HLF gives financial help to projects which safeguard improved access to land, buildings, objects and collections of importance to the national heritage of the UK. It can also provide support for projects which produce wider public benefits in terms of education, access and urban regeneration. Trustees do not receive remuneration, but are entitled to claim a daily allowance of £180.

Primrose Wilson OBE:

Primrose Wilson is one of the Deputy Chairs of the National Heritage Memorial Fund, Heritage Lottery Fund and Chairman of the Committee for Northern Ireland. She was awarded an OBE in 1997 for services to conservation. She is a member of the Advisory Committee of Maintain, Vice Chairman of the HEARTH Housing Association and HEARTH Revolving Fund, a trustee of the Ulster Historic Churches Trust, a Trustee of the United Kingdom Building Preservation Trust (Phoenix), Vice Chairman of the Northern Ireland Association of APT’s, and a member of the Heritage Council of Ireland.

She was formerly Chairman of the Historic Buildings Council for Northern Ireland and Chairman of the Ulster Architectural Heritage Society, Director of the Irish Landmark Trust.

Primrose Wilson has undertaken no significant political activity in the past 5 years and holds no other public appointments.

The Earl of Dalkeith:

Lord Dalkeith is a former Deputy Chairman of the Independent Television Commission and member of Scottish Natural Heritage. He is currently (since 1994) a Commissioner with the Millennium Commission. He has a strong interest in the environment, historic buildings and art. He also has an interest in a range of voluntary activities which include being a member of the Winston Churchill Memorial Trust and President of the Royal Scottish Geographical Society.

Lord Dalkeith has undertaken no significant political activity in the past 5 years.

Nicholas Dodd:

Nick Dodd became Chief Executive of Sheffield Galleries & Museums Trust in June 2002. He came to Sheffield from Wolverhampton where he worked as Head of Arts and Museums for eight years. He brought with him a wealth of experience gained in the Heritage, Arts and Museums sector. Originally an Archaeologist, Nick soon expanded his career within museum education, working at the National Postal Museum, London and the Rural Life Museum in Kent. Moving to the Midlands he worked as Senior Keeper of Social History at the Herbert Art Gallery and Museum before becoming Project Manager of the award winning Godiva City exhibition.

In the eight years previous to his employment with the Trust, Nick led the transformation of the Museums service in Wolverhampton, celebrating the re-opening of the Wolverhampton Art Gallery before he came to Sheffield. During this period Nick initiated far-reaching and highly acclaimed audience development plans, particularly for those with special needs.

Nicholas Dodd has not undertaken significant political activity in the past 5 years and holds no other public appointments.

Giles Waterfield:

Giles Waterfield is an independent curator and writer, who was the Director of the Dulwich Picture Gallery until 1996. He curated the Art Treasures of England exhibition at the Royal Academy in 1998. Currently he is joint Director of the Attingham Summer School, which is devoted to the study of the English country house, and also Director of Royal Collection Studies. He brings extensive experience as a curator and strong interests in educational work.

Giles Waterfield has not undertaken significant political activity in the past 5 years and holds no other public appointments.

James Wright:

James Wright was formerly Vice Chancellor of Newcastle University, a post he held from 1992 to 2000, following a distinguished academic career at Cambridge and Edinburgh Universities. Mr Wright has wide interests in the public sector, having served as non-executive member of Northern and Yorkshire Regional Health Authority and the Scottish Higher Education Funding Council. He has been closely identified with the life of the North East, through Newcastle Common Purpose and the Newcastle Initiative, and is currently Chair of Connexions Tyne and Wear.

James Wright has undertaken no significant political activity in the past five years.
